Green Roofs for More Life and Less Heat

The second stage of Cham Nord makes a strong statement for sustainable construction with its extensively greened rooftops. These landscaped roofs combine ecological enhancement, energy generation, and rainwater management into a holistic concept that benefits both the environment and residents alike.

The extensively planted roofs feature a rich mix of native wild herbs and grasses – a true paradise for wild bees, butterflies, and beetles. Deadwood piles, root stumps, and sand patches create additional refuges and microhabitats that further support biodiversity. Varying substrate depths add topographic variety and help establish stable vegetation structures.

Beyond their ecological value, the green roofs also play a key role in improving the local climate: they balance temperatures, reduce summer heat islands, and increase air humidity throughout the neighborhood. At the same time, they slow down surface runoff, easing the load on the drainage system.

Particularly innovative is the combination of photovoltaics and biodiversity – the rooftops generate clean energy while providing vital habitats for countless species. In this way, sustainability at the CHAMA site becomes visible, tangible, and truly alive.
